In-Depth Information
within walking distance of the Cove Park where most of the surf rentals take place, so if
part of your group is out surfing, you can wander down here for some souvenir browsing
while they finish their time on the water.
South End
As you move south from the Kalama Village area down into the Kamaole area, the strip
malls get smaller but also more frequent. In the Dolphin Plaza you'll find Maui Gifts and
Crafts (2395 S. Kihei Rd., 808/874-9310, 9am-9pm Mon.-Thurs., 9am-6pm Fri.-Sun.), a
store which has everything from carved wood turtles and elephants to exotic imports from
Indonesia and beyond.
The next shopping complex is small Kamaole Beach Center where the main retail
outlet is Honolua Surf Company (2411 S. Kihei Rd., 808/874-0999). This is another
surf store that focuses on high-quality surf-themed clothing and is named after Maui's le-
gendary north shore surfing spot. What's nice about this store is that you can occasionally
get the exact same Honolua brand clothing here for cheaper than you will find it at places
such as Whalers Village in Ka'anapali or at the nearby Shops at Wailea. More than just a
clothing brand, Honolua name aims to capture the Hawaiian lifestyle.
Rainbow Mall is home to Maui Fine Art & Frame (2439 S. Kihei Rd., 808/222-3055,
www.mauiartframe.com , 11am-8pm daily), one of the few art galleries found anywhere in
Kihei. In addition to having numerous island-themed paintings and ceramics, the frames
that encompass the artwork are a separate art form unto themselves.
WAILEA
Shops at Wailea
Any longtime visitor to Maui will remember when the Shops at Wailea (3750 Wailea
Alanui Dr., 808/891-6770, www.theshopsatwailea.com , 9:30am-9pm daily) were a
plantation-style shopping complex with wide open grassy areas and free hula shows from
local halau . These days, words such as “discount” and “affordable” rarely exist inside
these walls, although there are still a few locally run stores where you can find items
at a reasonable price. Once inside, you'll notice art galleries such as Ki'i Gallery (808/
874-1181) and Dolphin Galleries (808/891-8000) accompanying surf shops like Billa-
bong (808/879-8330) and Honolua Surf Company (808/891-8229). You can often spot
celebrities hanging out in luxury stalwarts such as Tiffany and Co. (808/891-9226), Gucci
(808/879-1060), or Louis Vuitton (808/875-6980).
