MA'ALAEA
Ma'alaea Harbor Shops
Unless you count the boat crew in the harbor selling T-shirts out of their slips, the
Ma'alaea Harbor Shops (300 Ma'alaea Rd.) are the only place in Ma'alaea with any
shopping at all. Though small, there are still a number of stores worth poking your head
into if you're killing time or the rest of your party is still inside the aquarium.
The best shopping in Ma'alaea is found at the large arts and crafts fair (9am-5pm
daily) overlooking the harbor. Dozens of local artists cycle through here, so every time you
visit there's sure to be something new springing up. Much of the artwork is ocean-themed.
The only surf shop is Da Beach House (808/986-8279, 10am-5:30pm daily), which has
a surprisingly decent assortment of beach and surf wear to accompany a wide range of ac-
cessories. As a bonus, there are often surf videos on display.
The massive headquarters of the Pacific Whale Foundation (808/249-8977, paci-
ficwhale.org , 6am-8pm daily) has a retail section with everything from OluKai slippers to
marine-themed artwork and a large selection of clothing and books.
KIHEI
North End
At the far northern end of Kihei is the Sugar Beach General Store (145 N. Kihei Rd., 808/
879-9899) within the Sugar Beach Resort. It can accommodate your basic sundry needs if
you're staying at a condo in the area.
Up on Pi'ilani Highway, the Kihei Gateway Plaza is a sprawling semi-industrial com-
pound with a smattering of clothing shops that might interest visitors. Of the main stores
in the plaza, the largest is Maui Clothing Outlet (362 Huku Li'i Pl., 808/875-0308,
9am-8pm Mon.-Sat., 10am-6pm Sun.) with an enormous selection of resort wear and
island-themed clothing at discount prices. One of the sister stores in the same area is Pretty
Wahine (362 Huku Li'i Pl., 808/879-1199, 10am-6pm daily) which focuses primarily on
women's boutique clothing options.
While the Azeka shopping centers on South Kihei Road are mostly full of chain stores,
Paradise Sandal Company (808/879-4884) is the exception in the Azeka Mauka Center,
