In-Depth Information
Wailea
With 11 courts and a medium-size pro shop the Wailea Tennis Club (131 Wailea Ike
Pl., 808/879-1958, www.waileatennis.com , 7am-6pm daily) is the largest tennis facility in
South Maui. This is where the bulk of the island's professional events and tennis clinics
are held, and the likes of the Bryan brothers and Andre Agassi have swung through here
in recent years. There are three lit courts, multiple teaching pros, a large backboard, and
a grandstand-style stadium court with a multi-terraced rock wall. At Wailea you can do
everything from get your racquet restrung to join a morning clinic, and it's the longest-run-
ning tennis community on the south side of the island.
Makena and Beyond
For those staying in Makena (or willing to drive 10 minutes farther), the Makena Tennis
Club (5400 Makena Alanui Rd., 808/874-1111, www.makenaresortmaui.com/tennis ,
7am-7pm daily) offers six recently resurfaced courts and two lit courts which stay open
until 9pm (with advance notice). The overall numbers here are smaller than at Wailea, but
the stronger sense of community in Makena is evidenced by the small fire pit used for
casual gatherings. The small pro shop offers tennis merchandise and racquet restringing,
although it's closed daily noon-3pm. As at Wailea there are private lessons, rentals, and
clinics available, but one difference between Wailea and Makena is that Makena can see
just a little less rain and wind if the elements are inclement up the road.
Yoga, Fitness, and Spas
YOGA AND FITNESS
Kihei
When it comes to finding a yoga class in Kihei, the challenge is choosing which of the
many operators you'll join for some sun salutations. One of the most complete class
schedules is at the Kihei Community Yoga Center (1847 S. Kihei Rd., 808/269-2794,
www.kiheiyoga.com ), an operation that provides mats free of charge and holds multiple
classes daily. Drop-in rates are $16, and a package of five sessions is $75. Those who buy a
package can sometimes get discounted rates with local massage operators, so inquire about
any specials they might currently be running. The studio location isn't anything amazing
(it's across the street from Kalama Park), but this is a great place to mingle with the local
yoga community if you plan on spending any length of time on the island.
