Makena and Beyond
Although it isn't an actual shop, if you are staying at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort
(5400 Makena Alanui Rd., 808/874-1111, www.makenaresortmaui.com ) , the hotel offers
free bicycles for guests to use anywhere in the Makena and Wailea area. Don't expect a
high-performance road bike, but otherwise, it's a great way to wake up in the morning and
explore Makena on two wheels completely free of charge.

If you just want to go out and play a relaxing round without shelling out resort prices,
Elleair Golf Course (1345 Pi'ilani Hwy., 808/874-0777, www.elleairmauigolfclub.com )
is one of the island's best golf values. It offers views looking out toward Molokini Crater
and the West Maui Mountains. This par-71 course isn't as challenging as the Wailea Gold
course, but it still provides an enjoyable round for the everyday golfer. Club and equip-
ment rentals are available from the pro shop, and there's a driving range for working on
your stroke before your round. The afternoon trade winds can have a major effect on the
play here. Rounds can usually be found in the $85-115 range. To save a few dollars, check
the website for online specials. They also offer an affordable nine-hole twilight special if
you want to sneak in a few holes after a morning excursion to Molokini.
Wailea
The Wailea Gold (100 Wailea Golf Club Dr., 808/875-7450, www.waileagolf.com ) course
is the best course in all of South Maui. This is where the pros play when they come to town,
and the 7,000+-yard course (don't worry—there are six different tee boxes) and 93 bunkers
will challenge even those with the lowest of handicaps. Guests staying in the Wailea resort
complex can play a morning round for $190, whereas guests from other resorts will have
to shell out $209. May 1-December 20, the rates are only $179 for all visitors regardless of
where they're staying. As at other courses across the island, afternoon rounds are heavily
discounted. Club rental and practice facilities are located at the main Wailea clubhouse.
