In-Depth Information
lava rock walls conjure images of what this coast must have been like in the days before
contact with Europeans.
Although Kanaio Beach is the turn-around point for the majority of hikers, the King's
Highway continues all the way until it joins with Highway 31 on the “back road to Hana.”
To reach the highway, however, would require an overnight stay along the trail; camping is
permitted along the shoreline from points east of Kanaio Beach. For the average hiker who
wants to travel just a little farther, however, a sandy road continues from Kanaio Beach
and winds its way along the coast. Another 20 minutes of walking from Kanaio will bring
you to a shoreline that's completely bathed in bleached white coral, and on the southern
end of the “white beach” is an ancient Hawaiian heiau set out on the point that looks much
the same now as it must have when it was built.
BIKING
Despite the flat terrain and sunny weather, South Maui doesn't have the same number of
biking options that you might find upcountry or on the road to Hana. The most scenic ride
in all of South Maui is the one between Wailea and the end of the road at La Perouse Bay.
Early mornings are the best time for cycling, as the road can get narrow and congested with
visitor traffic. On the far northern end of Kihei, a bike path parallels Mokulele Highway,
running almost all the way toward Kahului. The wind can be brutal in the afternoons and
the scenery is nothing but cane fields and the highway. South Maui is best for a leisurely
ride on a beach cruiser, swapping spandex for a bikini or boardshorts and pedaling the flat
shoreline with the sun on your face.
