In-Depth Information
For a lengthier, guided stand-up paddling tour, the crew at Hawaiian Paddle Sports
(808/660-4228, www.hawaiianpaddlesports.com ) can meet you at Makena Landing where
you can take part in a two-hour lesson and tour of the historic Makena coastline. Unlike
with other operators, these are private tours, and rates vary between $159 for a solo person
to $109/person for private groups over five.
WINDSURFING
While the north shore of the island is the windsurfing center of Maui, occasionally there
are days when the wind direction makes Kihei a better option. This usually happens when
the wind is out of the due north or there is a strong kona wind blowing out of the south. If
it happens to be one of the days when Kihei is better than Kanaha, the most popular area
for launching is Mai Poina 'Oe Ia'u Beach Park in North Kihei toward the intersection
of Ohukai and South Kihei Road. There's a large grassy area here for rigging your equip-
ment. Don't go too far from shore because the wind can drop off in an instant. Despite the
fact that this is the second most popular part of the island for windsurfing after the north
shore, all of the rental shops for windsurfing gear are in Kahului.
Kayaking and Canoe Paddling
When all factors are considered, Makena is the best area for kayaking and paddling. Not
only is the area far more culturally rich, but it takes the wind about an hour longer to reach
down here than in neighboring Kihei or Wailea.
If you are trying to choose between an outrigger canoe and a regular kayak, the main
difference is that the canoes have a cultural component that doesn't exist with a plastic
kayak. The original Polynesians didn't navigate here on a Hobie craft, and when you take
part in an outrigger canoe tour, you get the chance to learn about a mode of transportation
which is central to Polynesian culture.
When it comes to a paddling tour, don't let the food be a deciding factor. Most tours are
only a few hours long, and you can only do so much when it comes to paddling with food.
Since many companies will charge substantially more for a tour with food, you're better
off having a hearty breakfast or bringing a few snacks for a tour which is only 2-3 hours
long.
My top pick for paddling activities is Hawaiian Paddle Sports (808/600-4228,
