In-Depth Information
WAILEA
Surf Spots
On the north side of Mokapu Beach, Stouffer's is a local spot for shortboarding. If you're
an intermediate surfer this is an A-frame peak that can pick up southwest swells in the
summer and large west swells in the winter. Parking is either at the south lot of Keawakapu
Beach or in the public parking at the bottom of Ulua Beach Road.
MAKENA AND BEYOND
Surf Spots
Not many visitors surf in Makena, although it isn't because there isn't any surf in Makena.
There simply aren't any surf breaks which are suitable for visitors. If you're an interme-
diate to advanced surfer, your best bet is on the north end of the park at Little Beach. To
reach the wave you need to carry your board up and over the hill that separates Little Beach
from Big Beach. Since this beach is clothing optional, there may be naked people sharing
the lineup with you. If surfing naked is on your bucket list, this is your chance. There are
some other breaks farther south, but they are advanced and localized. You can watch the
powerful surf, but don't plan on bringing a board with you.
Stand-Up Paddling
KIHEI
Kihei is one of the best spots on the island for stand-up paddling, and all of the major surf
schools will also offer paddleboard services. Getting out on the water in the morning is
imperative with stand-up paddling because once the trade winds pick up it can become
impossible to paddle upwind. For a truly meditative experience, rent a board the evening
before and get up early the next morning for a sunrise paddle. The rays of sunlight emer-
ging from behind Haleakala best seen from the water. One of the best runs in Kihei is to go
from Sugar Beach to the Menehune Shores condominium and back, or you can always just
putt around the coastline by Kamaole and stop at whichever beach is calling your name.
Rental Shops and Schools
Learning to stand-up paddle can often consist of a single lesson. Professional instructors
can give you all the pointers you need—such as where to stand on the board, how far apart
