In-Depth Information
Suring
If you look at a map of South Maui, you'll notice that much of it actually faces west. This
means that South Maui can get waves at any time of year. It's the southwest swells of sum-
mer that bring the best waves, but large northwest winter swells can also wrap into select
areas to provide the occasional out of season surf. If you're a complete beginner, the only
spot in South Maui you should attempt to surf is The Cove in South Kihei, but if you're an
intermediate or advanced surfer, there are other spots to check out.
MA'ALAEA
Realistically, the chances of you surfing in Ma'alaea during your time on Maui are slim,
because most of the breaks are either way too fickle or way too advanced. Ma'alaea is one
of the few spots on Maui that actually faces almost due south, which means that summer
is the only time there will be waves.
Surf Spots
Those familiar with Maui surfing have probably heard of the Ma'alaea Pipeline, also
known as Freight Trains. This wave needs a huge south swell to start working, but when
it does, it's one of the fastest right-hand waves in the world. Don't start frothing with ex-
citement thinking you're going to surf it anytime soon, however, as Freight Trains can turn
off for up to a decade. On medium-size south swells it's still possible to surf here, but the
coral reef makes it exceptionally shallow and you need to be an advanced surfer. To reach
Freight Trains, park along Hauoli Road across the street from Ma'alaea General Store, and
either cut through the condominium grounds or follow the shoreline as it departs from the
harbor.
The most consistent wave in Ma'alaea is a spot known as Off the Wall. This is an A-
frame, shifty peak that breaks directly in front of the harbor wall, and you can usually only
surf here in the morning hours before the afternoon trade winds start howling. To access
Off the Wall, park in the dirt parking area between Buzz's Wharf restaurant and the begin-
ning of the harbor breakwall. From this little corner of harbor the paddle out to the peak
is easy, and it beats jumping off the breakwall and clambering over the slippery rocks. Ex-
pect short but fun rides, and while it isn't the best break in all of South Maui, it's at least a
nice place to get wet.
