In-Depth Information
The finest restaurant in Kahului, Bistro Casanova (33 Lono Ave., 808/873-3850,
www.bistrocasanova.com , 11am-9:30pm Mon.-Sat., $14-38) livens up downtown with a
fusion of Mediterranean and Italian cuisine. The tapas menu served after 3pm has afford-
able crostinis, gnocchi, and grilled calamari. A swanky bar attracts the after-work cocktail
crowd. The wine list features over 20 selections from various global wine regions. The din-
ner menu features meat entrées such as lamb chops and New York steak and pasta dishes
like ravioli al tartufo and linguini al funghi.
Pizza in Paradise (60 E. Wakea Ave., 808/871-8188, www.pizza-maui.com ,
11am-9pm Mon.-Thurs., 11am-10pm Fri-Sat., $13-26) puts out arguably the best pizza on
the island in one of its most unassuming locations. This family-run joint makes its own
dough and sauce. Whole pies are available, but the “by the slice” option is nice for lunch
on the go. The menu also features subs and pasta, but it's the pizza that keeps locals walk-
ing through the door. It's best to not be in a rush; the food can take some time. Parking can
be a challenge.
American
It's a chain inside a mall, but the burgers at Ruby's Diner (275 W. Ka'ahumanu Ave., 808/
248-7829, 8am-9pm Mon.-Thurs., 8am-10pm Fri., 7am-10pm Sat., 7am-9pm Sun., $7-10)
are the best in Kahului. Tucked in the lower level of Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center, the
1950s-style diner also serves up massive fountain shakes, sandwiches, salads, and a large
breakfast menu.
Also in Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center, Koho's Grill and Bar (275 W. Ka'ahumanu
Ave., 808/877-5588, 7am-10pm Sun.-Thurs., 7am-11:30pm weekends) offers a daytime
menu of sandwiches and omelet plates accompanied by potatoes for breakfast. Surf photo-
graphy lines the walls, sports plays on the TV, and a wide range of beers, margaritas, and
happy hour specials are offered at the bar.
If hunger strikes as you're on your way to or from Lahaina, stop at Café O'Lei (1333
Maui Lani Pkwy., 808/877-0073, 8:30am-7:30pm Tues.-Sun., 8:30am-4pm Mon., $8-14),
inside the Dunes at Maui Lani golf clubhouse. Sandwiches and burgers are affordable,
while entrée items include blackened mahimahi or tiger shrimp linguine. Breakfast is
served until 10:30. There's a full bar and an outdoor patio that looks out over the golf
course.
