When it comes to plate lunch M Da Kitchen (425 Koloa St., 808/871-7782, www.da-kit-
chen.com , 11am-9pm Mon.-Sat., $10-17) has the most ono-kine, broke da mouth grinds
anywhere in town. The restaurant is tucked away in a small strip mall off Ka'ahumanu Av-
enue; the same mall as HI Tech Surf Sports and Denny's—look for the huge sign that says
“Restaurant.” Despite the obscure location, it's always packed. Show up hungry; you're
sure to leave full. Some of the items on the “Moco Madness” are big enough to split
between two people (lunch for under $20). For a tasty, albeit artery-clogging meal, go all-
in with fried spam musubi followed by a Polynesian Paralysis Moco of fish tempura, kalua
pork, two eggs, onion, mushrooms, and gravy over fried rice.
Mexican
For quick and authentic Mexican food, visit Las Piñatas (395 Dairy Rd., 808/877-8707,
www.pinatasmaui.com , 8am-8pm Mon.-Sat., 9am-8pm Sun., $7-10), next to Kinko's off
Dairy Road. The “Kitchen Sink” burrito is so big that a growing teenager will have trouble
cleaning the plate. Bottled beer and horchata are available to drink. As the name suggests,
over a dozen piñatas dangle from the ceiling. It's a great lunch option if you're heading to
or from the airport.
Amigo's (333 Dairy Rd., 808/872-9525, www.amigosmaui.com , 10am-9pm Mon.-Fri.,
9am-9pm weekends) is another filling and authentic Mexican option. Don't be fooled by
the obscure location behind the gas station and next to the Minit Stop. Daily specials make
this a cheap place to grab a bite. Order a margarita, Mexican beer on draft, or cap off your
carnitas with a shot of Patrón.
Italian
When you arrive at the Kahului Airport, the first restaurant you see (after the Krispy
Kreme) is Marco's Grill and Deli (444 Hana Hwy., 808/877-4446, 7:30am-10pm daily,
$13-19), on the corner of one of Kahului's major intersections. It's a favorite for grabbing
dinner before a red-eye flight. While the sandwiches are filling and tasty, the lunch prices
can be high. The dinner menu offers better value, with Italian classics like chicken parmes-
an and mushroom chicken fettuccini served by a slick and well-groomed waitstaff.
