RENTAL SHOPS
Kahului boasts a large number of rental shops where you can pick up anything from surf-
boards to stand-up paddleboards and kitesurfing to windsurfing gear. Of all the shops,
HI Tech Surf Sports (425 Koloa St., 808/877-2111, www.surfmaui.com , 9am-6pm daily)
has the largest selection of surf and stand-up paddleboards, which are $25 and $35
per day, respectively. Hawaiian Island Surf and Sport (415 Dairy Rd., 808/871-4981,
www.hawaiianisland.com , 8:30am-6pm daily) has surfboards start at $20/day or $110/
week, and you can save 10 percent by prebooking your board online. There are also stand-
up boards for $35/day or $199/week, and the same early booking discounts apply.
If you're a fan of Naish equipment, Naish (111 Hana Hwy., 808/871-1503,
www.naishmaui.com , 9am-5pm daily) also has a store in Kahului offering a full range
of rentals. For windsurfing, Second Wind (111 Hana Hwy., 808/877-7467,
www.secondwindmaui.com , 9am-6pm daily) offers full packages with all the gear you'll
need from $55/day to $575 for a 14-day package.
The shop closest to the beach itself is Kanaha Kai (96 Amala Pl., 808/877-7778,
www.kanahakai.com , 9am-5pm daily), which offers a 20 percent prebooking special on
windsurf bookings of seven days or more. Regular rates without the discount are $50/day
for a windsurfing rig to $560 for a 14-day package. You can also get a surfboard for only
$90/week, although the selection is smaller than at the stores back in town.
SCHOOLS AND LESSONS
Since Maui can offer some of the most exhilarating, yet challenging, conditions for wind-
surfing and kitesurfing, those who want to pick up the sports can save themselves hours
of frustration by taking lessons from a pro. When it comes to both, one class isn't going
to be enough, so ideally you want to book at least a five-hour package to maximize your
investment. Then again, every school offers a single-session option for those testing the
waters to see if the sport is for them.
One of the largest schools is Action Sports Maui (96 Amala Pl., 808/871-5857,
www.actionsportsmaui.com ) , a company that runs its North Shore operation out of Kanaha
Kai surf shop on the road toward Kite Beach. Kiting lessons range from $199 for a
2.5-hour intro class to $2,050 for a 10-day, 30-hour intensive training package. Windsurf-
ing lessons range from $89 for 2.5 hours to $395-575 (group/private) for a five-day course.
Action Sports Maui also offers classes which focus on honing individual skills such as jib-
ing, waterstarting, and shortboard basics.
