In-Depth Information
If, on the other hand, you're looking for a place you can linger, grab breakfast, get free
Internet access, and sip on a proper espresso, try Café Café (129 Lahainaluna Rd., 808/
661-0006, www.cafecafelahaina.com , 7am-7pm Mon.-Sat.) on Lahainaluna Road next to
Mr. Sub sandwich shop. There are a few outdoor tables for sipping your macchiato, and
you can also pick up organic, locally sourced, open-faced bagel sandwiches for $5-6.
On the inland side of the highway at the base of the Lahaina Smokestack, MauiGrown
Coffee (277 Lahainaluna Rd., 808/661-2728, www.mauigrowncoffee.com , 6:30am-5pm
Mon.-Sat.) serves 100 percent Maui coffee that's grown in the fields above Ka'anapali.
The 6:30am opening time is better than any of the locally run stores in town (Starbucks
opens the earliest at 5am; better to spend your money on island-grown coffee). There's
seating on the plantation-style porch, and the staff can answer questions on the island cof-
fee industry.
Shave Ice
There are few things better than a cold shave ice on a hot Lahaina day, and the best
shave ice in Lahaina is at Local Boys West (624 Front St., 808/344-9779,
www.localboyshaveice.com , 10am-9pm daily) across the street from the banyan tree. In
addition to the copious array of flavors, what makes Local Boys great is the way they offer
free Roselani (made on Maui) ice cream, Kauai cream, and azuki beans at the bottom of
the shave ice, which any island local knows is the only way to enjoy shave ice.
Market
Believe it or not, the seafood counter at the back of the M Foodland Farms (345 Keawe
St., 808/662-7088, 6am-7pm daily, $7) serves the best poke bowl on the island. Get a bowl
of ahi tuna and head down to the beach to enjoy it while watching the sunset. The third-
pound of yellowfin tuna is prepared in one of a dozen different ways, all served over a
bowl of sticky white or brown rice. Try the ahi shoyu, ahi Hawaiian, ahi oyster wasabi,
and the Flyin' Hawaiian flavor, where $0.25 of every pound sold goes toward professional
baseball player (and Maui local) Shane Victorino's foundation to help disadvantaged youth
in Hawai'i.
SOUTH OF LAHAINA
American
The only restaurant between Lahaina and Ma'alaea is M Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop
(820 Olowalu Village Rd., 808/662-3600, www.leodas.com , 10am-8pm daily, $8-12) in
