In-Depth Information
The seaside patio is the perfect lunch spot for pairing a sesame fish salad with a crisp glass
of white wine, and the fish tacos are affordable at $14 when you consider the oceanfront
setting. Reservations are necessary for dinner, where you can feast on entrées such as Pasta
'ele'ele (blackened fresh fish over whole wheat spaghetti in a cilantro pesto) and Hapa/
Hapa Tempura (sashimi-grade fish and caviar wrapped in nori). The wine list is one of the
most comprehensive on the West Side.
On the far northern end of Lahaina, M Honu (1295 Front St., 808/667-9390,
www.honumaui.com , 11am-9:30pm Mon.-Sat., 4:30pm-9pm Sun., $18-45) offers locally
sourced food in an oceanfront setting. Honu is the Hawaiian name for sea turtle, and there's
a high likelihood that you'll spot a turtle coming up for a breath at some point during your
meal. Chef Mark Ellman (one of the original founders of the Hawaiian Regional move-
ment) has crafted a masterpiece where butternut squash coconut soup complements main
courses ranging from lentil quinoa burgers to pork osso bucco. The pizzas are similarly de-
licious. The extensive craft beer selection features over 50 different microbrews—a rarity
among island restaurants. If there's a wait, try sister restaurant Mala, next door.
Food like this makes Star Noodle a local favorite.
