In-Depth Information
as late as 11pm, although as with most places in Lahaina, there isn't an official dance floor
so the atmosphere is relegated to drinks and mingling.
For karaoke, the most happening place in Lahaina for late-night sake and singing
is Kobe (136 Dickenson St., 808/667-5555, www.kobemaui.com , open until 1am) steak
house on Friday and Saturday nights from 9:30pm until well after midnight.
A couple of classic watering holes stay open until 2am. On Front Street, Spanky's
Riptide (505 Front St., 808/667-2337, www.spankysripstide.com ) in the 505 shopping
center on the far southern end is a good place to grab a cheap goblet of PBR, play pool,
and engage in conversation with a colorful cast of characters.
Legendary dive bar Sly Mongoose (1036 Limahana Pl., 808/661-8097), is in a nondes-
cript location in the Lahaina industrial park, on the inland side of the highway behind Pizza
Hut. This is a no-nonsense dive where the beer is cold, the drinks are cheap, the patrons
are mostly regulars. This bar isn't walking distance from Front Street, so you'll have to
take a cab here.
Food
The number of dining options on the West Side is overwhelming. In most places along the
west side, it isn't only the food you're paying for, but also the location. That sunset view
doesn't come cheap. It's still possible to get a meal for under $10 per person—just look
outside of the main visitor areas.
KAPALUA, NAPILI, KAHANA, AND HONOKOWAI
Continental
There are three facts about Maui you can take home with you: Haleakala is 10,023 feet tall,
the island of Maui is 727 square miles, and M The Gazebo (5315 Lower Honapi'ilani Rd.,
808/669-5621, 7:30am-2pm daily, $9-13) restaurant has the island's best breakfast. This
isn't exactly a secret, however, and there is a line out the door by 6:45am. What makes this
spot so popular is not only the oceanfront location gazing out toward Moloka'i, but also
the famous macadamia nut pancakes and heaping three-egg omelets. Lunch is offered until
closing at 2pm. Finding parking can be a little challenging. You can try for a spot along
the side of the road along Napili Place, or if everything there is full, you can park by the
Napili Bay beach access on Hui Drive and walk to the restaurant across the sand of Napili
