ers will bring children on stage for an impromptu hula lesson. The food is average and
what you would expect from a large lu'au. Mai tais and Blue Hawaiians are included in the
price of the ticket, but premium drinks will cost extra at the bar. During summer the lu'au
takes place daily 6pm-8:30pm, while September through May there aren't any shows on
Saturday or Monday and the festivities begin at 5:30pm.
Bars, Live Music, and Nightlife
Most of the bar scene in Ka'anapali plays out at the pool bars within the resorts. My fa-
vorite is the Grotto Bar at the Hyatt, which is tucked beneath two different waterfalls.
While the happy hour and dinner scene can be fun, if you're looking for anything later than
10pm, you're going to have to get a cab down to Lahaina. Hula Grill in Whalers Village
has live music every afternoon and evening, and neighboring Leilani's occasionally has
live music during happy hour. There is also live music on the center stage of Whalers Vil-
lage on Friday and Sunday evenings, and most restaurants and lobbies inside the resorts
will also provide it during the later afternoons, sunset, and peak dinner hours.
The only place in Ka'anapali with anything that resembles proper nightlife is Paradise
Grill (2291 Ka'anapali Pkwy., 808/662-3700, www.paradisegrillkb.com , open until 2am)
featuring live entertainment every night 10pm-1:30am. Paradise Grill and the associated
Mello's Bar are on the corner of Ka'anapali Parkway and Honoapi'ilani Highway. It's the
first building you see at the main entrance to the Ka'anapali resort. Most of the late-night
entertainment takes place downstairs in Mello's, while the upstairs section of the restaur-
ant usually has live music during the dinner hours 6pm-9pm. Expect to find acoustic music
upstairs during dinner, and rock, reggae, and karaoke later hours downstairs.
LAHAINA
Hula Shows
The free hula shows at the Lahaina Cannery Mall (1221 Honoapi'ilani Highway by
Safeway) take place in the center of the mall at 1pm on weekends, and evening shows be-
gin at 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday.
Theater
At Warren and Annabelle's (900 Front St., 808/667-6244,
www.warrenandannabelles.com , 5pm Mon.-Sat., $61 show, $101 package), any skepti-
cism you might have had about attending a magic show in Maui will be immediately
erased the moment you walk into Annabelle's secret parlor. Much more than a simple
