In-Depth Information
Lahaina
The only parasailing operation in Lahaina is West Maui Parasail (808/661-4060,
www.westmauiparasail.com ) out of slip #15. The prices here are the same as at the
Ka'anapali operation, but a benefit of parasailing out of Lahaina is that the water is con-
sistently calmer and glassier than in neighboring Ka'anapali. Since the boat ride is only a
little over an hour long, you can grab a three-hour public parking spot on the street and not
need to pay for an all-day lot.
JET SKIING
Just like parasailing, Jet Skiing is only available May 16-December 14 due to the presence
of humpback whales. During summer the island's only Jet Ski operation is Maui Water-
sports (808/667-2001, www.mauiwatersports.com ), in Ka'anapali just south of the Hyatt.
Even though the area south of the Hyatt is relatively protected from the wind, morning
hours are still the best to guarantee the calmest conditions. Also, the Jet Skiing here is
fairly regulated and isn't just a free-for-all. Riders are required to ski in a relatively organ-
ized pattern, stay inside the mandated buoys, and maintain a healthy distance from other
Jet Skis at any given time. Prices are $70 for a 30-minute ride and $98 for a full hour.
WAKEBOARDING
Captain Ryan at Wake Maui (808/269-5645, www.wakemaui.com ) now offers wake-
boarding trips in the flat water between Lahaina and Ka'anapali. Wake Maui provides the
only service of its kind where a six-passenger ski boat is equipped with all the wake toys
for a fun day on the water. Since Maui's winds can often be extreme, however, wakeboard-
ing charters usually depart around sunrise to capitalize on glassy conditions. Prices for
these dawn patrol wakeboarding sessions are $109/person for trips of three hours, or, if
you'd prefer to charter the boat as a private group, two-hour charters can be arranged for
$480 or four-hour charters for $739.
Hiking and Biking
HIKING
There aren't nearly as many hiking trails on the West Side of the island as you might ex-
pect. Unlike East Maui, which is laden with waterfalls and offers numerous hiking trails,
