In-Depth Information
considered bad luck. Most boats will let you keep what you catch so you can cook it the
same night.
Of all the boats in the harbor, one of the companies with the best reputation is Start Me
Up (808/667-2774, www.sportfishingmaui.com ), where prices range from $99/person for
a quarter-day charter to $199/person for a full day on the water.
A boat with a sterling reputation is Die Hard (808/344-5051,
www.diehardsportfishing.com ), run by the legendary Captain Fuzzy. Rates for these
charters vary, but expect to pay $200/person for six-hour charters and $220/person for full-
day, eight-hour charters.
Down at the south end of the harbor away from many of the other boats, Luckey
Strike (808/661-4606, www.luckeystrike.com ) has two different boats and operates on the
premise that using live bait for smaller fish is better. Captain Tad Luckey has been fishing
these waters for well over 30 years, and as with most captains in the harbor, he has an en-
viable and well-earned amount of local knowledge to put into every trip.
One of the nicest yachts in the harbor, Jayhawk (808/870-6994,
www.jayhawkyacht.com ) , offers private charters for $700/hour on a swanky 48-foot Cabo
with all the amenities. It's more than just a fancy ride, however. Captain Steve has been
fishing these waters for over two decades and can hook up fish as well as anyone else in
the harbor.
PARASAILING
Parasailing isn't available December 15-May 15. Since the waters off West Maui are part
of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, all “thrillcraft,”
such as high-speed parasailing boats, are outlawed during the time of year when the whales
are nursing their calves. All parasailing operations go dormant during the winter and open
up promptly on the morning of May 16. Should you happen to be visiting Maui during
the summer or fall, however, parasailing is a peaceful adventure option for gazing at West
Maui from hundreds of feet above the turquoise waters. Take a mental picture; it's one of
the best views you'll find anywhere on the island.
Ka'anapali
UFO Parasail (800/359-4836, www.ufoparasail.net ) departs off Ka'anapali Beach in front
of Leilani's restaurant and is one of the two operators departing from the beach. Only eight
people are on a boat at a time, which means that your overall time on the water is only
a little over an hour. Of that hour, your own personal flight time will last 10-12 minutes
