In-Depth Information
a good idea to double check on the morning of your sail to confirm where the boat will
be loading from. The northerly trade winds can often be chilly, so it's a good idea to bring
a light jacket. Finally, remember that you'll be sailing. Even though the vessels are wide,
stable catamarans, it may be difficult to move around and spray may come over the sides.
If your idea of a sunset sail is a stable platform that putts along at three knots, the dinner
cruises out of Lahaina are probably a better bet.
Trilogy (808/874-5649, www.sailtrilogy.com ) offers sunset sails on Tuesday, Thursday,
and Saturday, as well as an Aloha Friday sunset sail that features lives music and Pacific
Rim pupus. Trilogy's sail isn't marketed as a booze cruise. Three alcoholic beverages
(Bikini Blonde beer, premixed mai tais, margaritas, wine, and champagne) are included in
the price of the sail, with a three-drink maximum. Unless the surf is high and they need
to load out of Lahaina Harbor, all Trilogy tours check-in in front of the Ka'anapali Beach
Hotel. The vessel which Trilogy uses for sunset sails—most often Trilogy IV —is the smal-
lest of all the Ka'anapali catamarans, thereby making them the fastest boat under sail.
Regular sunset sails are $69, and the Aloha Friday sail is $79.
In front of Whalers Village, Teralani (808/661-7245, www.teralani.net ) offers two dif-
ferent sails departing nightly during the busier parts of the year. The original sunset sail
is $71/adult and includes a pupu menu as well as a full open bar of various beers and
mixed drinks. For those who would rather dine on board, the full dinner sail is $94/adult,
30 minutes longer, and includes a filling menu.
Gemini (808/669-0508, www.geminicharters.com ) similarly offers sunset sails for $70/
adult which feature a pupu menu as well as Bikini Blonde beer and mai tais.
The most “yacht-like” experience departing from the beach is on Hula Girl (808/
665-0344, www.sailingmaui.com ), which not only offers the newest boat, but also luxuri-
ous upgrades like throw pillows, free Wi-Fi, panoramic viewing from the fly-bridge, and
high-tech sailing. Regular sunset sails are offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and
while the $68 price looks in-line with the rest of the options, all food and drink are avail-
able for purchase from the kitchen and full-service bar, and such luxury and convenien-
ce come at an added price. For a full-service dinner cruise, Hula Girl also offers cruises
on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for $80/adult featuring upscale Pacific Rim dining
options made fresh in the onboard kitchen. It's more of a floating restaurant with an $80
cover charge, with menu items range from $5-23 with a full-service bar slinging top-shelf
cocktails at resort bar prices.
