Technical Safeguards:
The technologies,
the policies, and the procedures used to protect
and manage control access to ePHI. It includes
“technical security mechanisms” and “technical
security services.”
Security Rule:
One of the four standards or
rules constituting the Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. Its
requirements are divided into administrative, phys-
ical and technical/communications safeguards.
Business Associate:
Any entity (individual or
institution) that is not a member of the covered
entity's workforce performing any activities or
functions involving the use or disclosure of PHI.
Reasonable Safeguards:
Appropriate ad-
ministrative, technical, and physical safeguards
for PHI that have to be implemented by covered
entities as required by HIPAA.
Electronic Private Healthcare Information
(ePHI):
Any private, personal health related in-
formation or records on a digital format.
