In-Depth Information
You might separate map creation into three levels:
n World map: This is a high-level map of your entire game world. If your
world is particularly large or complex, it might need several maps. Think
of this as the state/county view.
n Area map: A close up map of a particular location. Here you might see
areas such as swampland, desert, buildings, and important landmarks.
n Building/inside map: You might need to map inside a particularly com-
plex building or cave complex.
Note
When you are beginning to create your world maps, you don
t need to have an amazingly artistic
and well-drawn map. Start off simple using MS Paint or any simple drawing package, and then
begin to make it more complex. Any map you make at this stage does not have to reflect an end
product. Maps are generally works in progress for much of the design stage.

Some basic examples of starter maps can be seen in Figures 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4.
