In many MMOs, once players have visited a travel point, they have then

To help players in combat situations, many MMOs allow certain character types
to have companions. This companion is usually an animal of some kind; for
example a tiger, dog, or mythical creature.

There are also MMOs that contain animals that cannot be involved in combat,
but are there for the players to collect. Games such as Free Realms and World of
Warcraft allow players to collect animals such as dogs, cats, and birds. In some
games, you have to feed your pets to keep them happy, and if the animals are not
kept happy they could leave you. This is particularly the case if they are wild
animals that you have tamed.

Gamers can become attached to games and in particular to items they collect.
For example, many gamers are animal lovers and have affection for in-game
