In-Depth Information
MMOs have an extremely wide range of sound requirements, from birds
chirping, to footsteps, to hitting/attacking sounds.
n Music Creator/Designer: Many MMOs use music as a way of welcom-
ing players to a new area or region. For example, in World of Warcraft,
you might hear a triumphant music score when visiting your home city.
There are other times you might want to use music, such as during
game loading, at the menu screens, or when players are travelling
between areas.
n Mission Creator: The mission creator is the person who generates mis-
sions for the game. He or she may be someone who actually writes the
mission scope or follows a brief from the designer.
n Mission Designer: This could be the same person as the Mission Creator
or the Game Designer, but the mission designer
s job is to create
as many high-quality missions (quests) as possible. These missions
should be based on the story of the game, helping to unfold parts of the
story as the players progress through the missions. For example, in the
Zombie Invasion MMO example, you could have a number of missions
to rescue particular characters from the town where the game is situated.
This would allow you to provide more details about the characters. The
mission designer might be using background information provided by
the storywriter.
n World/Level Editor: The world/level editor is the person who generates
the world that the players move around. This can include placing small
objects around a particular area or building or creating the landscape in
a zone. In some games, the terrain is randomly generated and then
modified using a terrain map and then the Level Editor will modify this
world to suit the design. The World/Level Editor
'
s job is actually quite
important, and will provide the users with visual cues so that early on
the players know which direction they should be travelling. The Level
Editor
'
s job is also key in ensuring the game world is realistic and
believable. Even when it
'
'
s a cartoon-based MMO, you still need to make
that believable for the type of game you are creating.
n Video Editor: There are a number of places where video is essential
within an MMO. This could be the CGI video at the start of the game,
