Chapter 18
Resources
Making an MMO is a big task, and though you can start off small and build up
the size of your game over time, you might want further help or resources to
help you get there quicker. The type of help you need depends on your skill set
and the other resources you have available, such as programming, design, or
artistic talents. It may also depend on how much money you have; if you are
making your game cheaply, you may not be able to pay for items or resources.
On the other hand if you do have some money in your budget, you may be able
to get things done quicker.
This chapter takes a look at which skills you need for yourself or your team
members, great resources to access, and how to accelerate your MMO creations.
Skills and Team Members
Games require people with many different skills and it is an unfortunate fact
that most of us don
t have all of the skills that are required to make a game on
our own. (Although, depending on the type of game you are making, this may
not necessarily be true. For example, if you are using a drag-and-drop game
creation system such as Multimedia Fusion, you may be able to make a game
from start to finish without any help.) With an MMO, there is no easy way to do
every aspect of the game yourself in most cases. Making something in 2D is
totally different from making something in 3D, with its tens, hundreds, or
thousands of users.
