Background: Players could start out in a gladiatorial training camp, not
necessarily in a major city. Much like in the film Gladiator you could start the
players in some backwater town. You could also start the game before the player
becomes a gladiator, to allow the player the chance to explore a town and take
part in a number of introduction quests before the main story arc takes place.
Roman history is fascinating, with lots of intrigue, wars, political unrest, and
stories of betrayal. There are many stories that can be utilized as part of your
own game. Of course, you always need to be careful when using history within
your games. Although with something as long ago as Roman times, you are
unlikely to offend someone if you change the facts or story.
With Romans and Gladiators you can take advantage of what an amazing
spectacle living in a Roman town or city would be. You can also make use of all
of the different tribes and countries that fought against the Romans as the
factions in the game.
