Some of these processes you may just think about, whereas others you may want
to write down (such as a planning or scope document) or even draw (such as
your design and creature ideas). Doing so will give you a clearer picture of what
you want to create and ultimately how you will create it.
Note
Some of the items listed for consideration may take place at the same time or over a long period of
time, or can be part of the same process. For example, you may want to combine equipment,
budget, timeframe, scope, and concept all into one process. The list is not exhaustive and is meant
to give you an idea of the concepts you should be thinking about.
Note
It
s often very useful to look at what happens in the real world of MMOs to see how it might help
you make a better MMO. This is always a useful exercise, even if you don
'
t have a $50-million
budget. You may only be making an MMO in your spare time, or hoping to get a small group of
people who will pay you for continual development, but looking at how other people approach
making a game can provide you with useful information.
'
Concept and Idea
Chapter 3 talked about coming up with an MMO idea. It
s essential that the first
thing you think about is what kind of MMO you want to make. Of course, there
are some other considerations that you will use at the same time as deciding
what to make, such as the scope of the project (its size), the budget that you have
available to you, and of course the time frame. All of these have a direct link to
the type of game that you want to make.
