FIGURE 3 Crepis capillaris : the mitotic indexes in seedlings (a) and rearrangements of
chromosomes in metaphase ( b ) after 24, 27, and 36 hr from the start of seed soaking in a solution
of phosphemid 2 × 10 -2 M (22.4 mg, 50 ml of water). Fixation: through 3-12 hr after “arising”.
Seeds germinate in 0.01% colchicine. Seeds are of harvest 1967. Analysis: June 1968.
Through 24 and 27 hr from the start of soaking of seeds the mitotic activity steadi-
ly was increasing to depending on term of ¿ xation in each “arising”. At a later arising
36 hr (see Figure 3a) or 31 hr (see Figure 4a) mitotic activity was À uctuating at a
highest level as compared as at the early stages of arising and terms of ¿ xation from
arising. These data on Figures 3 and 4 are statistically signi¿ cant. The frequency of
metaphases with rearrangements increased steadily in the fraction of the 24 hr from,
arising from 3 to 12 hr (see Figure 3b) and from 3 to 9 hr (see Figure 4(b)).
