I found a Victorian style strawberry tower holding 80 litres of compost and 32 plants bril-
liant. It's quite attractive despite being plastic and when the strawberries fruit it looks beauti-
ful. It only takes up a few square feet yet keeps us in fresh strawberries through the summer
with enough over to provide some delicious jam as well.
You can buy a potato barrel in a similar style to the strawberry tower but if you're not so
bothered about looks there's a range of large growing bags and sacks on the market or you
can even use an old compost bag with some drainage holes poked into it. The show growers
always grow in bags about the size of a two gallon bucket (one seed potato per bag).
Another method for potatoes and to provide large tubs is to use old tyres as bottomless
containers. While I'm all in favour of recycling, I'm not so keen on acquiring something that
requires specialist disposal if I change my mind.
