Successional Sowing
Method of sowing crops at intervals, usu-
ally every fortnight or three weeks, to
provide crops ready to harvest over a period
rather than in one go.
Tender
Describes a plant which is not tolerant of
frosts or even cold weather in the area in
which it is being grown. Typically requiring
a greenhouse or coldframe.
Thinning, Thin Out
Removal of seedlings or small plants to per-
mit others space to develop to their full po-
tential. Because seeds may not all germin-
ate, we sow more than required then thin out
to the required spacing.
Transplant
To re-plant, usually, into final cropping pos-
ition.
Truss
Used mostly with tomatoes to refer to the
cluster of fruits on a stem. Vine tomatoes in
a shop are more properly called a truss of
tomatoes.
Tuber
The thickened portion of a root such as the
actual potato in a potato plant.
Underplanting
Planting a low growing plant under a tall
growing plant, such as strawberries around
the base of an apple tree, thereby maximiz-
ing use of space.
Volunteer
A plant growing in the wrong place after
self-seeding or re-growth of a missed tuber
when lifting (main culprits are potatoes and
Jerusalem artichokes).
White Rot
A serious disease of onion, shallot, leek,
garlic and chives. It is soil-borne, very per-
