Buddha's birthday (celebrated on 17 May in 2013, 6 May in 2014 and 25 May in 2015) brings a kaleidoscope of
light and colour, as rows of delicate paper lanterns, lit at dusk, are strung along the main thoroughfares and in
temple courtyards.
Jongmyo Daeje
Held on the first Sunday of the month, this ceremony honours Korea's royal ancestors. It
involves a solemn costumed parade from Gyeongbokgung through downtown Seoul to the
royal shrine at Jongmyo, where spectators can enjoy traditional music and an elaborate, all-

Yeon Deung Ho (Lotus Lantern Festival)
Seoul's Buddhist temples, such as Jogye-sa and Bongeun-sa, are the focus of this celebra-
tion of Buddha's birthday. The weekend preceding the birthday, Seoul celebrates with a
huge daytime street festival and evening lantern parade - the largest in South Korea; see
