January
Local religious holidays and festivals, such as Seollal, follow the lunar calendar, while the rest follow the Gregorian
(Western) calendar. Dates have been given for upcoming years; sometimes Seollal will occur in February.
Seollal (Lunar New Year)
Seoul empties out as locals make the trip to their home town to visit relatives, honour an-
cestors and eat traditional foods over this three-day national festival. That said, there are a
number of events for travellers in Seoul during this time, held at the major palaces as well
as the Korean Folk Village, Namsangol Hanok Village and the National Folk Museum of
Korea. For more information, visit www.visitseoul.net or www.visitkorea.or.kr . In 2013
Seollal begins on 12 February, in 2014 on 31 January and in 2015 on 19 February.
