It was once divided strictly along nearly inescapable class lines and hierarchical distinctions, but Seoul's sensibility
is now much like any modern city. People often hold loyalties to school, company and church, but egalitarianism
has given way to greater individualism. The concept of family is rapidly changing as well: nuclear rather than ex-
tended families are the norm, and birth rates are among the lowest in the developed world. Still, there linger
strong traces of Korea's particular identity. Remnants of its Confucian past coexist alongside 'imported' spiritual
beliefs, denting the myth that modernisation necessitates secularisation.
