Less than 10km south of the DMZ, Heyri ( is a charming village of small-scale contem-
porary buildings that couldn't be more of a contrast to the heavily fortified, doom-laden
border. Conceived as a 'book village' connected to the nearby publishing centre of Paju
Book City, it has blossomed into a community of artists, writers, architects and other cre-
ative souls. There are scores of small art galleries, cafes, boutique shops and quirky
private collections turned into mini museums.

Top Tip
At Heyri's tourist office you can pick up a good English guidebook ( 2000) that details
the many places to see in the village.
Getting There & Away
Bus Express Bus 2200 ( 2000, 45 minutes) and local bus 200 ( 1800, one hour 20
minutes) both leaves from stop 16, near Hapjeong station on subway Lines 2 and 6 in
Seoul. Both pass through Paju on the way to Heyri; the local bus also stops near Odusan
and the Premium Outlet Mall in Paju.
