LEEUM SAMSUNG MUSEUM OF ART
Only have time to visit one art gallery in Seoul? Then make the Leeum - a masterful
combination of contemporary architecture and exquisite art - your first choice. The
hillside complex is made up of three contrasting buildings designed by leading inter-
national architects. It's fronted by a sculpture garden, containing Louise Bourgeois'
Maman (a couple of giant spindly-legged spiders) and her surrealist Eyebenches ,
and is a great spot to relax.
The randomly flashing LED installation Transcend Section by Tatsuo Miyajima
leads you into the lobby from where you access the three main buildings. Swiss ar-
chitect Mario Botta took his inspiration from Korean pottery for Leeum's Museum 1,
which houses refined traditional works - beautiful ceramics, metal work and
Buddhist paintings. Korean art from 1910 and international pieces from 1945 on-
wards are the focus of Museum 2, in a building designed by Jean Nouvel.
Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas was commissioned for the museum's third element,
the Samsung Child Education & Culture Center, a space used for special exhibitions.
