Gate 6 on Kalguksu Alley. Haejangguk Alley, between Gates 2 and 3, is lined with small
cafes selling Korean food - all with plastic replicas outside to make choosing easy. Next
to Gate 2 is a great stall selling veggie hotteok (deep-fried pancakes) for 1000 and
toasted sandwiches filled with freshly made omelettes ( 1200) or ham and cheese
( 1700).
Sungnyemun (Namdaemun)
Seoul's Great South Gate, known as Namdaemun, was destroyed by arson in 2008. Four
years of painstaking reconstruction of Korea's No 1 National Treasure are nearing com-
pletion and the wraps should now be off a reborn Sungnyemun
( www.sungnyemun.or.kr ) . The wood and stone gateway stands on an island amid major roads;
check the website for visiting details.
