Like a phoenix, the grandest of Seoul's palaces has risen several times from the ashes of destruction. Tourists have
replaced the thousands of government officials, scholars, eunuchs, concubines, soldiers and servants who once
thronged the palace. With its recently restored Gwanghwamun entrance, changing of the guard ceremonies and
several museums, it's a place you should set aside at least half a day to see.
Palace History
Originally built by King Taejo in 1395, Gyeongbokgung (Palace of Shining Happiness)
served as the principal royal residence until 1592, when it was burnt down during the
