In-Depth Information
South of Bukchon are the equally dense and maze-like streets of Insa-dong, one of
Seoul's most tourist friendly areas, packed with craft shops, galleries, traditional tea-
houses and restaurants.
Local Life
» Sunday Shopping It's a car-free day on Insa-dong-gil making this a popular time for
browsing the area's many crafts, antiques and art, and fashionable accessory shops.
» Jomgmyo Square The park in front of this venerable shrine is a daily gathering spot for
Seoul's senior set who come to natter, play board games such as baduk and janggi and
sometimes dance to trot (traditional electro-pop music).
» Streamside Wanders Stroll along the landscaped paths either side of the Cheong-gye-
cheon; if the weather's fine, cool your heels in the stream.
Lonely Planet's Top Tip
During the warmer spring and summer months, special events are often staged in the early morning or evening
at the palaces; tickets for some are limited so plan ahead particularly for the very popular Moonlight Tours of
Changdeokgung.
