In-Depth Information
commercial frenzy are the peaceful and tree-clad slopes of Namsan, a great place for exer-
cise and city views.
Western Seoul ( CLICK HERE )
Seoul's principal student quarter is home to Hongdae (around Hongik University), Edae
(around Ewha Womans University) and Sinchon (between Yonsei and Sogang Universit-
ies). These are youthful, creative districts short on traditional sights, big on modern-day
diversions and sybaritic entertainments. South of Hongdae across the Han River, the is-
land of Yeouido has several places of interest, all easily visited if you hire a bike in its
riverside or central park.
Itaewon & Yongsan-gu ( CLICK HERE )
The off-limits US army base is like a giant void around which Yongsan-gu's sights and at-
tractions revolve. You'll surely be paying a visit or two to Itaewon to sample its eating,
drinking and shopping possibilities. The adjacent areas of Hannam-dong, Haebangchon
(aka HBC) and Gyeongridan should be on your radar for the same reasons. The area has
several major museums and a top resort-like jjimjil-bang (upmarket sauna).
Gangnam & South of the Han River ( CLICK
HERE )
Gangnam (meaning south of the river) is a newly built area with high-rise blocks bisected
by broad highways. There are large parks in the shape of Olympic Park, the strip of recre-
ation areas along the Han River, and just outside the city limits, Seoul Grand Park. Luxury
label boutiques are clustered in Apgujeong and Cheongdam. You'll also find several ma-
jor performance arts centres across the district.
