A word on consistency in game design. Unless they are creating a world where
anachronisms are specifically acceptable, game designers should strive for
consistency in theme, story, events, characters, artwork, music, and so on. A
consistent world is a world that encourages the player

s willing suspension of
disbelief and smoothes the path to immersion in the game experience.
In a classroom, though, as in MMOs, the designer must deal with human beings
wanting to make their individual stamp on the world, especially with their
avatars. Everyone has her or his own ideas about what is creative or funny. So,
for example, as much as a designer may strive to create a world that is true to a
medieval fantasy setting, players may (and do) name their avatars just about
