The text incorporates elements of the back story devised by the guilds
for themselves and their home regions. And it introduces the next major
element of instruction. As discussed on Level 9, each guild was tasked with
building another character, an NPC for whom they would be responsible on the
quest.
Creating Characters
Most gamers are familiar with creating their own avatars. However, only those
few in the class who were interested in becoming writers of video games had ever
created a character in a story before. They were creating this character from the
bare bones of the summons, giving the three dimensions of character, a back
story, and a life. Plus, because each of the NPCs were flawed in some way,
having lost a power that they once possessed, a power that had defined them, the
students
'
stake in their NPCs would be increased.
The six NPCs, named by the students, were:
n Janus, a 10-year-old boy, who had healing powers, but had lost them. He
would be escorted from Wadi Shir to Scaleport by Deathbone.
n Deri, a formerly prosperous seller of potions in Scaleport, now fallen on
hard times. His potions had lost their efficacy for reasons unknown. He
would be escorted from Scaleport by the Shady Goobers.
