Zones
Since we were back to video games instead of the subset of multiplayer games, I
changed three of the zone names.
n Mount Miyamoto. Named for Shigeru Miyamoto, Japanese video game
designer and producer at Nintendo who has created some of the most
successful video game franchises ever, including Mario , Donkey Kong
and The Legend of Zelda . He is the first person to be inducted into the
Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences
'
Hall of Fame.
Isle of Wright. Will Wright returns from the previous game, the creative
force behind the Sims franchise.
n
n Caverns of Bartle. As the co-creator of the first MUD, Richard Bartle
also returns, representing multiplayer games.
n Romero
s Ruins. John Romero, the co-founder of id Software, is
responsible for popularizing first-person shooters with the classics
Wolfenstein 3D , Doom, and Quake .
'
Sid
s Swamp. Sid Meir is the designer of Civilization , widely considered
to be one of the best video games ever created. He is the second person
to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences
'
n
'
Hall of
Fame.
They were arranged like this in Figure 8.4.
Again guilds were moved from zone to zone. I used this chart to track guild
movement throughout the semester.
A more formalized procedure was adopted for players answering questions
about the people their zones were named after. This culminated in December
with another PvP event where guilds were required to defend or reject, including
these designers on the game map. They did not know which zone they would
end up in the day of the competition, so they were required to research all five.
All guilds chose to defend the inclusion of the zone
s namesake. The debate
started slowly, but picked up rapidly with members of other guilds challenging
their conclusions. After the defenses, everyone voted on who had done the best
job.
