A new addition to the format section was an attempt to map more
gamer references on to real world elements. It had always felt artificial to
create avatars and guilds, and then refer to the roles that players would take on
by real-world professions. So in this iteration, I settled on fantasy role-playing
classes instead.
Designers became Mages because there is a good deal of magic in the initial
creative process that gives birth to an idea that can grow into a game, a movie, or
a symphony.
Writers became Rangers. I was on shakier ground here! I am a writer, and I play
rangers or their equivalents (hunters, archers) in almost every role-playing game
I play. One of the reasons I chose fantasy role-playing classes is because I like
fantasy better than other genres, such as science fiction, horror, dystopia, and so
