THE SHAP STONES
Along the final stretch into Shap, not-too-weary walkers may notice the change of bed-
rock from the granite of the Lakeland fells to the limestone that will now accompany the
way. Not all the stones and boulders are limestone, however, for nearby, in the fields,
are a number of huge boulders of granite. These are the Shap Stones (or Karl Lofts),
thought by early historians to be relics of a monolithic monument. They are evidence
of a double, mile-long avenue of single boulders (megaliths) extending northwest from
a stone circle just west of Hardendale Quarry at the southern end of the village.
