The planning phase of the IIOE started under the auspices of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Re-
search (SCOR). The operational phase of the expedition began in 1962, after IIOE was transferred on to the
Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. Currently, a follow-up expedition is
being planned to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the IIOE (cf.
