8.4.2 Why Argo matters
The broad-scale global array of temperature/salinity profiling floats, known as Argo, has
already grown to be a major component of the ocean observing system. Argo provides a
quantitative description of the changing state of the upper ocean, and an ocean-atmosphere
forecast. It also documents seasonal to decadal climate variability, to aid our understanding
of its predictability. Therefore, Argo is a major instrument for observing and analysing cli-
mate change as well as for marine and ocean forecasting.
