Predictions of extreme storm surges and wave heights are more uncertain, owing
to their dependence upon possible long-term trends and changes in atmospheric pressure
fieldsandwinds.Itcanbeconcludedthatthereisaneedtotakeintoaccountpossiblefuture
increases in sea level, extreme storm surges, and waves in designs for protecting life, prop-
erty, and infrastructure in coastal regions. The same applies to offshore infrastructures and
from the economic and environmental standpoints.
