CHOOSING A COMPANY
» Start by poking around on charter-company websites and looking at the photos and layout
schematics for available boats.
» Call the companies that interest you. Ask for references from recent clients and spend
some time talking with the company's representatives. They should be able to answer your
questions about the charter area, the sailing conditions, their fleet, a suggested itinerary and
whatever else you want to know. If you're not satisfied, call another company.
» Two trade groups provide information on crewed charters. The BVI Charter Yacht
Society ( www.bvicrewedyachts.com ) and Virgin Islands Charter Yacht League
( www.vicl.org ) have the layman's lowdown on boat types, sizes and amenities to help you
can make an informed decision. There are also links to reliable vessels and brokers.
DAY-SAIL OPERATORS
If you don't have the time or inclination to charter a boat, you can always head out on
a day sail. Most operators have a set schedule for visiting certain islands throughout
the week. Costs hover around $70 for a half-day sail, to $100 or so for a full-day ex-
cursion. Prices usually include snorkeling gear and drinks.
