CHOOSING A BASE: TORTOLA OR ST
THOMAS
» Tortola holds the greatest number of charter boat companies in the Virgins - more than
anywhere else in the Caribbean - while St Thomas ranks a distant second.
» Tortola's pros include a wider selection of boats, and a shorter sailing time to reach the
best cruising areas (most are in the BVI). If you decide to stay solely in the BVI you won't
have to worry about going through customs.
» St Thomas' pros are that it's usually easier and cheaper to get to, and groceries and supplies
are cheaper.
» In Tortola the main base is at Wickhams Cay 2 in Road Town. The marina is well located
near a supermarket, liquor store, several accommodation options and other necessities.
» In St Thomas, the American Yacht Harbor marina at Red Hook serves as the primary base.
It, too, has good provisioning options nearby.
