WHEN TO GO
Weather and cost are the major considerations for when to set sail. If cost is your main factor,
be aware that low-season rates drop by around 30% from the peak rates from January to
April.
» Winter Winds average 15 to 22 knots from the northeast; the 'Christmas winds,' which
have been known to extend into January and even February, are the strongest of the year.
When the wind is northeast, northside anchorages, including Tortola's popular Cane Garden
Bay, are uncomfortable to impossible.
» Spring&summer The wind swings around through the east to the southeast and declines
to an average of 10 to 18 knots. Many sailors prefer the milder and somewhat warmer con-
ditions of spring. August can be dicey with big storms.
» Fall In September and October, when the trade winds are at their weakest, the weather
tends to be more unsettled. September is also the most likely month for hurricanes, so it's
probably the best month to avoid.
