WHERE TO SNORKEL: USVI
Snorkeling is mega-popular in the USVI, with St John leading the pack. Snorkelers can see
tropical fish, sea turtles and even nurse sharks within a quick swim from shore.
» If you're going DIY snorkeling, stop into a local dive shop beforehand and ask about area
conditions. Staff can tell you where the fish and turtle hot spots are, as well as where hazards
such as strong currents loom.
» On St John you can also ask park rangers for the lowdown, or pick up a copy of the bro-
chure titled Where's the Best Snorkeling? at the park visitors center.
» Snorkel gear is widely available for rental ($7 to $10 per day) at water-sports centers on
beaches and at dive shops.
» If you plan on spending significant time in the water, a lycra skinsuit or thin wetsuit is
recommended to protect from stings and scrapes, as well as the sun.
