EQUIPMENT: PACK OR RENT?
Well-maintained rental gear is available at most dive centers, as long as you're not picky
about size. Some small, easy-to-carry items to bring from home include protective gloves
and boots and spare straps. Here's a quick guide:
»
Mask, snorkel & fins
Many people bring these as they are not too huge to pack and you
can be sure they will fit. Snorkeling gear rents at $7 to $10 per day.
»
Tanks & weight belt
Usually included with the cost of a dive.
»
Wetsuit
A lycra dive skin or 3mm shorty wetsuit is ample thermal protection in the sum-
mer, while a full 3mm suit will protect against coral scrapes and keep you toasty in winter.
A wetsuit usually is included with the cost of a dive, but bring your own if you are worried
about size.
»
Regulators & Buoyancy Control Devices
(BCDs) Most dive shops have them; rentals
cost around $15.
